Edward F. Neu, 91, of Sciotoville, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at SOMC Hospice Center.
Born Sept. 15, 1916, in New Boston, he was a son of the late Frank Joseph Neu and Anna Wilhemina Hoberg Neu, and was a retired resident engineer with the Scioto division of Norfolk and Western Railroad.
Ed was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran, serving as a navigator on a B-17 Flying Fortress. His plane was forced to crash land in enemy occupied France in early 1944. The French underground hid him for three months before leading him over the Pyrenees Mountains and eventually into Spain, where he surrendered to Spanish officials.
After returning to the United States, he was assigned as an instructor of navigation until the end of his enlistment. Ed was a member of Aurora Masonic Lodge 48, Valley of Cincinnati Scottish Rite, the Odd Fellows, James Dickey Post of the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Also preceding him in death were his wife, Betty Marie Sturgill Neu, whom he married Oct. 4, 1941; four brothers, John Neu, Carl Neu, Frank Neu and William Neu; and two sisters, Clara Gregory and Nettie Dortch.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth Edward (Pam) Neu of Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Lois Kaye (Richard) Fenton and Peggy Ann (John) Pollitt, all of Portsmouth; grandchildren, Tony (Jeni) Fenton, Amanda (Rod) Caseman-Sparks and Christopher (Stephanie) Caseman-Neu; great-grandchildren, Aaron Fenton, Ryan Fenton, Riley Fenton, R.J. Sparks, Hayley Sparks, Colten Edward Sparks, Olivia Marie Neu and soon to arrive, Layla Claire Neu; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.
A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Brant Funeral Home in Sciotoville, with Lynn Wessell officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, with military honors by the James Dickey Post. Friends may call at Brant's in Sciotoville from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. A Masonic service will be 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
