Nellie Agnes Purdy Bishop, 97, of Minford, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at Hillview Health Care Center in Portsmouth.
Born April 5, 1914, in Scioto County, she was a daughter of the late George W. Mougey and Littie (Erwin) Mougey of Minford, Ohio. She was a member of Harrison Free Will Baptist Church and secretary of the Sunday school for 34 years, and was a faithful member until her health failed and prevented her from attending church. She was a graduate of Minford High School in the class of 1932 and played on the winning basketball team of 1932. She was a seamstress and quilt maker, and was also known for her hot rolls and pies by her family and friends.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Paul Denning, Esther and Clifford Jenkins all of Minford; three grandsons, Jeffrey P. (Leeann) Denning, Darren C. Jenkins, David A. (Jamie) Jenkins; five great-grandchildren, Katherine N. Denning, Devin P. Jenkins, Darbie I. Jenkins, Levi C. Jenkins, Seth M. Jenkins; a special nephew, Howard (Jane) Mougey; a cousin, Pauline Wright who stopped by almost every day; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Purdy on September 28, 1965, whom she married on June 1, 1932; her second husband, Edmund Bishop on February 14, 1992, whom she married on February 14, 1977; five brothers, Samuel, Floyd, Clarence, Emmett Mougey and Eli Mougey in infancy; five sisters, Florence Powell, Esther Cooper, Irma McCoy, Clariena Poole, and Ethel Mougey who was 3 years old; and was a twin sister to Emmett; one granddaughter, Pamela K. Denning; and a great-grandson, Matthew Kevin Denning.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford with Pastors Dan Widdig and Mike Mounts officiating. Burial will be at Bennett Cemetery in Minford. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
